An OEM LED flood light supplier should not treat flood lights, track lights and tube lights as one interchangeable catalog. They solve different optical and installation problems. A buyer developing all three product lines needs consistent quality systems and branding, but each family requires its own photometric, thermal, electrical and mechanical review.

The strongest RFQ begins with the application. Outdoor flood lighting is driven by area coverage, weather exposure and surge conditions. Retail track lighting is driven by beam control, glare and color quality. T8 tube projects are driven by retrofit wiring, socket compatibility and safe installation. One generic wattage-and-price table cannot cover those risks.

Flood lights begin with the target area

For an LED flood light, wattage is not the design goal. The buyer should define mounting height, setback distance, target illuminance, uniformity and the surfaces that must remain dark. A narrow optic can produce a strong center reading while leaving poor edge coverage; a wide optic can waste light outside the site. An IES file and a simple lighting calculation are more useful than comparing lumen numbers alone.

Outdoor projects also need an environmental specification. Ingress rating, ambient temperature, salt or chemical exposure, wind load, bracket strength and cable entry all affect lifetime. If the fixture is used on a building facade, yard, sports area or loading zone, the supplier needs that context before recommending housing, optic and mounting hardware.

Driver and surge design are part of the fixture

LED chips receive most of the marketing attention, but field failures often involve the driver, connectors or thermal interface. Buyers should specify input-voltage range, power factor, harmonic limits, dimming method, surge requirement and protection behavior. The driver should be evaluated inside the closed fixture at the highest expected ambient temperature.

Surge protection should match the installation, not a universal headline. A remote site with long outdoor cable runs can face different transients from an indoor commercial circuit. Confirm whether the stated surge level applies line-to-line, line-to-ground or both, and ask how the protection circuit behaves after repeated events.

Thermal performance should be measured at the hot spot

High initial lumens do not prove that a flood light will maintain output. Junction temperature, driver temperature, heat-sink design and surface finish influence lumen maintenance and component life. A useful validation report identifies thermocouple locations, ambient temperature, operating time and stabilized readings.

OEM buyers should also review what happens when wattage, housing color or driver brand changes. A housing that is adequate for one configuration may not have enough thermal margin for a higher-power version. Each BOM combination should have an approved test record rather than inheriting results from a visually similar model.

Track lights are optical tools for retail spaces

Track lighting buyers should focus on beam angle, center-beam intensity, cutoff, glare control and color consistency. Two fixtures with the same watts and nominal CRI can create very different displays. Fashion, food, artwork and general merchandise may require different color rendering and beam shapes.

Compatibility with the track system must be confirmed. Adapter type, mechanical locking, electrical contacts, driver position and dimming method vary by market. Ask for the exact adapter drawing and install samples on the customer’s actual track before approving production. For multi-store programs, check color consistency across several fixtures and lots under the same scene.

T8 tubes need a clear retrofit method

A T8 tube project is incomplete until the wiring method is defined. Ballast-compatible, ballast-bypass, single-ended and double-ended designs have different installation requirements and safety implications. The label, end-cap construction and installation guide must match the product supplied.

Private-label projects may include housing color, logo, carton artwork, cable, connector, driver, LED package, CCT, beam angle and accessory changes. Each change should be tied to a revision-controlled specification and golden sample. If a quotation says “same as sample” without a BOM and drawing, future lots are difficult to inspect.

Packaging is also an engineering item. Flood-light brackets can damage coatings, track-light reflectors can scratch, and long tubes need protection against bending and end-cap impact. A drop-test plan should use the final carton quantity and export route, not an unprinted sample box.

Certifications must match the sold configuration

A supplier may have certified products, but the buyer needs evidence for the exact model, voltage, driver and construction being purchased. Changing a driver, cable, housing or LED board can affect the certification scope. Request the certificate, report number and model list, then compare them with the production nameplate and BOM.

Different destination markets may require different safety, EMC, energy and chemical-compliance documentation. Decide the target countries before sample approval. Adding a new market after mass production can create retesting, labeling and inventory problems.

A useful factory review follows the production flow

  • Incoming checks for drivers, LED boards, housings, optics and cables;
  • Soldering, assembly and torque controls for heat paths and brackets;
  • Electrical safety, grounding and functional tests;
  • Integrating-sphere or photometric verification by defined sampling;
  • Waterproof and aging tests for applicable flood-light models;
  • Color, dimming and flicker checks for track and tube products;
  • Label, carton and accessory inspection against approved artwork;
  • Lot identification and retained samples for later investigation.

What to send before requesting a quote

For each product family, send a separate requirement sheet. Include application, target market, voltage, power, lumen and optical target, CCT and CRI, dimming, ambient temperature, IP and surge requirements, dimensions, finish, certification, packaging and annual volume. Attach the lighting plan or installation photo where possible.

Ask the supplier to mark every deviation rather than silently substituting a nearby standard model. A disciplined quotation should distinguish confirmed requirements, optional choices and items still requiring test. That record becomes the basis for sample approval and production inspection.

The advantage of sourcing flood lights, track lights and tubes from one manufacturer is not merely a larger catalog. It is the possibility of consistent documentation, color targets, quality control and packaging across a project. That advantage disappears if the three families are approved with one generic checklist.
